Hi Reader! This week a new article by myself and colleagues was published in the International Journal of Dream Research. In this article, we lay out a proposed method of online dreamwork for clinicians. This article closes a gap in the literature, showcasing the safety and effectiveness for asynchronous online dreamwork. That’s a mouthful – the term means dream sharing over secure forums, email or patient portals rather than face-to-face (synchronous) dream sharing. I’m not a clinician: my contribution to this article was providing the history and philosophy of online dream sharing, which is something I have been practicing and writing about for some twenty years. Did you know that dream sharing on the internet has been happening before there even was a worldwide web, when folks were logging on with their home phone lines and chatting asynchronously in Bulletin Boards? This was before AOL and long before Google was even a dream, and much less a verb. Personally, it’s also been my experience as a community builder that focused back-and-forth dream sharing with a partner or a group online can lead to really powerful insights. And the research behind this backs it up; in fact, studies have shown that asynchronous dream sharing can provide more insights than face-to-face dream groups. Why? Because we sit with the dream for a while and let it distill before commenting the first thing we think. Our responses are more measured and thoughtful. There’s always a place for in person dream sharing of course—the point is that now we have more guidance for how to extend the power of dream sharing to clients who are not able to access in-person care or group dream circles. If you’re a therapist, dream coach or someone who is serious about evidence-based methods for online dream sharing, I think you’ll get a lot out of this new piece. And please share it with your colleagues! Currently, only something like a quarter of counselors feel comfortable enough to work with their clients’ dreams in their private practice. We are hoping this article helps to elevate this number with clear and safe protocols that centers accessibility. Hi Reader! How’s your dream life? Lately, I’ve been noticing how simple habits are critical to my dreaming. For example, if I start the week off recording my dreams Monday morning, then I’m much more likely to do the same on Tuesday too. By Thursday, I'm enjoying a full back-and-forth conversation between waking life and my intuitive self, and by Saturday, a big lucid dream when I sleep in. So much of this creative flow depends on how my Monday morning goes. One disruption in routine, like...
This morning, I woke up from a dream and then closed my eyes. I felt the energetic rumbles take hold and "I" slipped through the mattress into a cool dark space. I was immersed in unseen water, and I felt the waters healing me. Relaxing into it, I then felt like I was drawn by a current of water, like drifting down a river. I woke up to the sound of morning world (honking horns) and despite my annoyance of the wake up -- I felt absolutely refreshed. Ok, time to get to kids to school. This is...
